General Nutrition – Cancer Prevention, Healing and Recovery

Nutrition

Proper nutrition and purified water is critical to a successful anti-cancer strategy. Diet alone can make or break the effectiveness of any cancer treatment and is therefore the most important strategic point. Knowing which foods feed cancer cells, which interfere with the treatment, and which assist in healing is vital.

Refined sugar feeds and strengthens cancer cells and should be the first substance to be eliminated. Sugar substitutes, refined flour and trans fatty acids damage the body and numerous studies link them to cancer. Dairy and all mucus-forming foods should also be avoided. Processed foods, carbonated beverages, coffee, alcohol, chlorine and fluoride fall into the category of foods and substances that interfere with healing and may fuel the cancer's growth. Conversely, a diet of nutrient-rich foods will enhance all levels of the healing process.

All plant foods contain nutrients that aid healing. Herbs, fruits and vegetables have properties that protect against and inhibit the proliferation of cancer while strengthening, cleansing and repairing the body. These include green leafy vegetables, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, etc.), sea vegetables, fruits (especially berries and dark grapes with seeds and skins), garlic, ginger, turmeric and green tea, among many others. A diet containing an abundance of organic plant foods provides layers of nutritional protection.

Concentrated essential fatty acids from cold-pressed flax, hemp, olive oils, etc. may be used unheated while virgin coconut oil can be used for cooking. Although these healthy oils as well as fats from whole foods such as avocados, raw nuts and seeds provide the essential fatty acids necessary for oxygenation of cells, they should nevertheless be kept to a minimum (approximately 15% of diet) since fat slows digestion and in large quantities may accelerate tumor growth. Once the cancer is stabilized this restriction may be relaxed.

Animal protein should be eliminated if possible; however, we are all of different constitutions, so for those who must consume flesh, it should be restricted to small amounts of organic, pasture-fed beef or poultry, and wild-caught fish. Beans and legumes are an excellent source of fibre and many important nutrients and may be consumed in moderation.

While whole grains also contain fibre and nutrients, there is disagreement among experts as to their place in a healing diet. Due in part to their sugar and gluten content, and the digestive load they place on the body already burdened by cancer, they should be eliminated or restricted to gluten-free varieties, at least until the condition is stable. Likewise, natural sweeteners such as honey and maple syrup should also be restricted while cancer remains active. The herb stevia is a safe natural sweetener.

The cancer survivor should aim for a diet that is at least 80% raw. This will ensure an alkaline environment as well as an ample supply of enzymes for healing processes. Juicing of fresh, organic vegetables and fruits is extremely beneficial. Oral supplementation of digestive enzymes with meals and systemic enzymes on an empty stomach will further aid healing. Nutritional therapy for cancer seeks to return your body to its natural state of balance and health.

Appetite

Eat as often as you can. A small, regular intake is preferable to nothing. If you have zero appetite, distract yourself while you eat: listen to music, read, watch a video. You may have to consider eating as an exercise in willpower for a time. Purée rather than juice. If at all possible, try and eat slightly more than you are normally used to. This is to compensate for the fact that in advanced cancer your resting metabolic rate (i.e. rate at which you burn calories and consume energy), is actually elevated significantly above average. Hence the rapid wasting. If eating alone is not enough to maintain your weight stable, then you may need herbal or supplemental help.

Recommended Food

Eat clean, live foods - Look for food that’s organically grown, local and in season. Ensure produce is pesticide and herbicide free. Check that meats and poultry were not raised on antibiotics, hormones or other unnatural substances and ensure fish comes from clean water, free of mercury. Fish lower on the food chain are better to consume as they accumulate less toxins throughout their lifetime.

Antioxidants - When the liver processes toxins, cancer-promoting free-radicals are produced in high quantities.  Of all antioxidants, glutathione is the best at counteracting the free radicals created during this process. Excellent sources of glutathione include asparagus, avocados, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and walnuts

Make it priority to put one or more of these foods on your menu every day.

Raw produce - Eat as many raw vegetables and fruits as possible, especially those that have deep, rich colors.  These foods are high in fibre, which helps flush toxins from your system, and they’re potent sources of ANTIOXIDANTS.  When you eat them raw, you will also retain their natural enzymes, which help you digest food and absorb the maximum amount of nutrients into your bloodstream. 5 or more fruits and vegetables per day are actually known to prevent and even reverse cancer!

Juicing - Juicing, if you can do it, (see Max Gerson, A Cancer Therapy, and Leslie Kenton, Juice High), is a wonderful way of really concentrating good nutrition in an easy format. But if you are losing weight rapidly, purée instead. The best kind of juicer, if you can afford it, is one such as Vitamix, which does not strain out essential fibre from fruit and vegetables.

Snacking - Snack on high protein whole foods, such as raw nuts and seeds, trail mix, spirulina bars, oat cakes, brown rice crackers and bean spread.

Fibre - Eat gluten-free whole grains including quinoa, buckwheat, millet, oats and brown or wild rice. For extra fibre and cancer-fighting phytonutrients known lignans, take 4 tablespoons of ground flaxseeds daily with 10 ounces of water (for maximum benefit, grind flaxseeds before consuming). Flaxseeds are also high in essential fatty acids omega 3 and 6 (linolenic and linoleic acids). Chia seeds are also a fantastic source of fibre, omega 3 and protein!

Vitamin E - Eat wheat germ, raw nuts and seeds for their vitamin E content.  Vitamin E is another powerful antioxidant.

Essential Fatty Acids - Keep the total percentage of fat in the diet around 15%, if possible, (do not exceed 30%). There are good fats and bad fats. The only oils you should use are cold-pressed plant oils (ex: extra virgin olive oil), a little butter or ghee, and virgin coconut oil. Discard all other oils, and margarines. Avoid and heated vegetable oils and hydrogenated fats in biscuits, cakes, crisps etc. These fats actually block the keys which enable your body to utilise essential fatty acids, or good fats. (95% of the population are deficient in essential fatty acids). You can improve your good fat intake by supplementing with 3000mg or more - up to 5000mg daily of fish oil, or adding raw hemp and flax seeds to your diet. These contain omega 3 fatty acids which have been demonstrated to retard the progress of cancer quite significantly and help prevent cachexia, the wasting associated with cancer. You can eat fish in moderation, oily in particular, such as mackerel, herring, wild salmon and tuna and sardines. Avoid smoked foods

Sulphuric foods - Garlic, onions, and legumes, which are high is sulphur, will help keep your liver functioning at optimum capacity and increase immunity.

Fermented soy products - Add fermented soy products to your diet in moderation. These include miso, tempeh, tamari, natto and edamame (young soy beans). However, it is strongly advisable to avoid soy in over-processed forms, such as TVP, "mince", burgers, sausages, etc. The processing involved actually adds high levels of carcinogens – nitrosamines – and toxic metals to such soy products. Apart from lowering cholesterol and being an excellent source of protein, soy contains isoflavones. Isoflavones are anti-angiogenic, that is they can interfere with the process by which tumours establish a life-line and grow. Drink Miso broth, or make miso soup daily, particularly if you are undergoing radiotherapy. Miso contains a chelating agent that can remove heavy metals and radioactive matter from the body.

Lean protein - If you’re battling cancer, you don’t need to be told how important it is to keep up strength and energy.  Protein, specifically plant-based protein, is important to prevent muscle wasting. People undergoing conventional cancer therapy require increased protein intake to prevent tissue wasting.  However, do not exceed 40 grams of protein a day. More than this will severely tax the liver's detoxification systems and promote conditions favorable to cancer. If you are suffering from a hormonal cancer, such as Breast or Prostate Cancer, you would be very strongly advised to give up all dairy products altogether, beef and pork, with the possible exception of organic eggs. Otherwise, some lean animal protein from eggs, poultry or fish in extreme moderation is acceptable. Other great sources of plant-based protein include beans, legumes, raw nuts and seeds (especially hemp and chia seeds), quinoa, buckwheat, spirulina, chlorella, sprouts, etc.

White or green teaThese teas act as mild stimulants for the immune system.  Overall, white and green teas contain very powerful antioxidant and anticancer nutrients. Drinking at least 1 cup of either per day is associated with a 54% lower risk of developing cancer. Medicine suggests that drinking about 4-5 cups of white or green tea daily may slow metastatic tumour growth by up to 50%. Other herbal teas, such as pau d'Arco, essiac, cats claw, milk thistle, dandelion etc. are beneficial.

Lycopene - Tomatoes and other red vegetables are high in lycopene, which is a substance that’s been shown to prevent and even help counteract cancer.  It is said that lightly cooked tomatoes are higher in lycopene than raw ones are.

Fresh fluids - Make sure to drink plenty of purified water to promote healthy detoxification.  Fresh juicing with vegetable and fruit juices is highly advised. Try to consume 8 to 10 ounces a day of a variety of juices.

Herbs and Spices Use plenty of herbs and spices to season your food. Therapeutic doses of turmeric (curcumin) reverses the growth of tumor cells by up to 98%. Ginger, cayenne pepper, garlic, curry, turmeric, etc. are all great anti-inflammatory spices. Milk thistle, dandelion, burdock root, etc. are excellent cleansing herbs that can be consumed as teas.

Post treatment superfoods - For further protection from the side effects of radiation, post-therapy, make frequent use of seaweed in soups, salads, casseroles, dips etc. Good seaweeds to try are kelp, nori (sushi wraps), arame, hiziki, dulse, wakame and the popular algae spirulina and chlorella.

Food to Avoid

Processed and refined food - Do not eat foods that don’t come from nature!  Processed food, junk food, and anything containing chemicals, additives or dyes should be banished from your menu.  Make every effort to avoid foods that have been sprayed, waxed, or otherwise treated.

Refined sugar and salt - While there’s no evidence that refined sugar directly causes cancer, we do know that too much of it significantly depresses the immune system.  A weak immune system may leave you vulnerable to cancer, and it can also sap your ability to handle aggressive cancer treatment.  Do NOT eat products containing refined sugar such as sodas, candy, cookies, pastries, cake, store bought juices, processed foods, white bread and white pasta. You should also restrict your intake of natural sugars (maple syrup, honey, cane sugar, agave nectar, coconut sugar, etc.) if your cancer is active. Use Himalayan pink salt or celtic sea salt in place of refined table salt. They have better mineral value and are not processed and chemically refined.

Bad fats – Hydrogenated, partially hydrogenated and trans fats are linked to most degenerative disorders, and cancer is no exception.  Saturated fat should be moderated. Some examples of bad fats are fried foods, vegetable oil, shortening, margarine, cottonseed oil, and the list goes on.  It is better to consume foods high in cold-pressed essential fatty acids such as extra virgin olive oil, flaxseeds, hempseeds, virgin coconut oil, avocados and other raw nuts and seeds.  However, these oils and foods are NOT to be heated, as their fats are unstable and will become trans/hydrogenated fats = bad fats. Do not fry food. Grill or steam.

Red meat - Avoid red meat, and meat in general if possible, unless game, or organic.

Meats that have been grilled, charcoal-broiled, cured, or smoked are carcinogenic.  It would be best to stay away from these foods such as hot dogs, cold cuts, luncheon meats, bacon, ham, sausage, steak, etc.

Alcohol - Be wary of alcohol; it is linked to some cancers and severely depresses the immune system.  If you’re a healthy person trying to avoid cancer, limit yourself to a glass or two of wine per week.  If you have cancer, it’s best to avoid alcohol entirely, as it depletes much-needed nutrients from you body and causes dehydration.

Excessive caffeine - Avoid concentrated doses of caffeine such as coffee, sodas. Processed chocolate and energy drinks. Much better alternatives include white and green teas, as well as raw cacao in place of processed chocolate or candy bars.

Inflammation foods - Anything that produces inflammation in the body provides an environment for the cancer to grow. Chronic inflammation thus promotes cancer tumor growth; acute inflammation is the only that may be helpful (from injury). Reduce inflammation to help the immune cells kill the cancer cells. A reduction in your consumption of meat, dairy products, bad fats, refined grains and sugar is associated with a substantial reduction in recurrence and increased survival in patients diagnosed with cancer. An unhealthy diet contributes to chronic inflammation in our body; animal fats, saturated fat (in excess), trans fats, sugar and refined carbohydrate increase inflammation. Fruits and vegetables, omega 3 essential fatty acid and whole natural foods in general reduce inflammation.

What Beyond Vitality Can Do For You

These guidelines are merely an overview of the impact nutrition has on cancer prevention, healing and recovery. A comprehensive holistic protocol would include much more, because it is what we put in our body, what we’re exposed to in our environment and our mind frame, that has the greatest impact on our health. The overall picture is considered. The term "cancer survivor" refers to those who have been diagnosed with the disease and are still alive – whether they are in remission or not. The cancer survivor should adopt as many of these strategies as is feasible, slowly incorporating them into one's lifestyle and working with holistic practitioner for support and guidance to make positive lifestyle changes for optimal health. If you wish to take your health to the next level, we urge you to contact Beyond Vitality to discuss a personalized health program specifically created for your needs and health goals, as it pertains to cancer prevention, healing or recovery. A comprehensive approach to healing cancer includes at least the following factors:

  • Proper nutritional therapy
  • Detoxification & clean water
  • Supplementation & herbs
  • Immune building
  • Oxygen and pH
  • Natural chemotherapies
  • Lifestyle changes: quality sleep, sunlight & exercise
  • A positive attitude
  • Spiritual cleansing
  • Encouragement & support

Regardless of the cancer's aggressiveness, the body will respond to this holistic approach - the speed and degree to which it does so is commensurate with the diligence and extent to which these factors are applied. No cancer treatment, conventional or otherwise, comes with a guarantee; however, it's important to consider that orthodox treatments ravage the body and ignore the underlying causes while natural treatments strengthen the body and address its healing requirements. A natural approach will address long-term health and bring the body back to balance.
