Athlete Bio and Stats - Sara Subero

movement May 22, 2013

My name is Sara, and I’ve been involved in competitive sports from a young age. Although I started out as a figure skater in Canada, my aim has now shifted to middle distance running here in the Caribbean. It was quite a drastic change going from cold ice rinks to the warmth of the Caribbean, but I love it! My life has revolved around my passion, which have always been health and my disciplined training schedule as an athlete. In my teens, I became one of Canada’s few quadruple gold level figure skaters, and continued to represent The University of Guelph’s varsity figure skating team.

In 2011, I relocated to Trinidad and Tobago and attended my first race on Chancellor Hill (I barely made it up!), where I discovered the +One A Week Running Group and joined the club. I started to love running more and more as I kept striving and improving my times. At the end of 2011, I became pregnant with my daughter Skyla. I continued running (moderately) throughout my pregnancy. My last race was just two weeks before my baby girl was born.

I came back a stronger runner than ever, as I was determined and motivated after having a long “recovery run” period (aka pregnancy). It was only after pregnancy that I began running competitively. I started slowly at the typical 6 weeks after giving birth, and then six months post-partum into training, I was official a faster runner than I had ever been before. Having my baby to care for helped teach me good time management skills, as I had a lot to juggle between my little bundle of joy, planning a wedding, training work and managing my company Beyond Vitality: Holistic Health Nutrition and Fitness. It was quite a journey coming back after pregnancy, but I definitely had the drive and dedication to do it with my athletic back round, and a strong positive mind. On top of that, I have a great coach! Dexter Simon, from the OAW running group, led me in the right direction and gave me some intense training programs. He’s always giving me guidance and encouragement through good days and bad. I couldn’t ask for a better coach!

Of course, I also can’t forget my loving husband-to-be, Stephan Subero, which none of this would have even been possible without. He supported my busy life as a new mom, and helped me make it work. From early morning training (as early as 2 am), baby duty, giving me massages, preparing wonderful meals and cheering for me on race day, he was and still is there for it all. So I say thank you, to both my coach Dexter and husband-to-be Stephan.

To my darling little girl Skyla, thank you for being my number one fan and motivation. There were lots of runs with the stroller, as my baby sang to me, or slept soundly with the bumpy motion she was so accustomed to in the womb.  Motherhood has been my greatest joy, as well as running of course!

I have achieved many personal records in the last year (post-partum year), and plan to keep improving them in the near future. Now as an elite runner classed top 5 in middle distance running in Trinidad and Tobago, I continue to strive and achieve my goals race by race. I have big dreams and goals, and I know that if I put my mind to it I WILL achieve them. The mind is very powerful! The sky is the limit and anything is possible.

Secrets

This is a side of me SOME people don’t know. They see me running and think I’m so composed and disciplined (that’s what they tell me anyway), but there’s more to it! This is a behind the scenes look at my running and life.

Secret #1: My longest run ever was on a treadmill while pregnant (4 hours; no idea I was preggers yet)

Secret #2: I pee a lot (squatted everywhere on the Savannah and in the jungle)

Secret #3: I don’t drink commercial sports drinks (ex: Gatorade; I make my own)

Secret #4: My husband to-be gives me massages (best hubby ever!)

Secret #5: My bladder is not fully recovered since pregnancy (I MAY twinkle while running sometimes)

Secret #6: I have a homemade concoction before every race

Secret #7: I run to stay sane (I get very irritable if I get more than two days rest)

Secret #8: I don’t eat dairy products before races (or much at all)

Secret #9: I run better as a mom (and running makes me a better mom!)

Secret #10: I fuel on whole natural foods

Secret #11: I make my own sports gel (chia seeds are a key component)

Secret #12: I tie and re-tie my shoes at least 5 times before races

Secret #14: My motivation to run is my baby girl (and it makes me feel great!)

Secret #15: I love cash prizes (shhh!)

Secret #16: I do most of my “easy” and “recovery” runs while pushing the stroller

Secret #17: I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Secret #18: I eat like a large football player (my husband can testify!)

Alright, I have to be honest. There are a few more secrets, but I can’t tell you just YET. They are TOP secret. Classified information. Well, I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you. Ok...either that or I may have to hide under my blanket forever! More secrets to come…soon enough!

Potential Sponsors

Are you a potential sponsor? Do you like my drive, motivation and/or purpose? Get noticed with some “mileage” (a.k.a your logo on my training and race tops) and some other perks and recognition. As a busy mom with an intense training schedule, I am always looking for the extra help that can give me the edge, while also being able to help give back to local economy and share products I love using or great support I receive. I have a huge following online (website/social media/blog) and love to talk about my running and those who help me achieve my goals. Potential sponsors, please contact me at[email protected] for a copy of my sponsorship proposal, as well as to find how sponsoring an athlete (me!) is mutually beneficial.

Sponsor ideas:

Supplements, bars/gels, protein powder, shoes, running clothes, gear, healthy food, massages, travel and/or accommodations for races abroad, money to be put towards training, OR a babysitter so I can train more! ;)
