Avoiding Dental Problems on Raw Foods
Aug 07, 2015
Healthy teeth are important for everyone, no matter what diet they prefer: raw food, vegan, or other. Many people believe that eating raw, uncooked and unprocessed food will miraculously cure their teeth, but they are wrong. It can happen that dentists discover cavity when you’re several weeks or even months into raw food diet. To avoid dental problems on raw foods, you can follow certain rules and guidelines which will keep you healthy.
This is a guest post by Victoria Lauren, a mom, wife and student of natural medicine. We hope that you find it enjoyable and informative.
Be careful when eating fruit
Fruit is delicious and full of nutrients and vitamins, but basing your diet mostly on fruit can leave a negative impact on your teeth and gums. Eating acid fruit like pineapple, oranges, and grapefruit, especially imported fruit and that ‘early fruits’ you get weeks before their season actually beings, means that you are probably taking in more acid than you usually would. More acid in your system means that your urine and saliva are acid as well and it can damage your teeth and make your gums start receding. To avoid this, brush your teeth regularly, and try buying and eating more organic fruit. In addition try adding more magnesium and calcium to your diet to reduce the acidity.
Reduce the sugar
On a raw food diet you will not be eating a lot of sugar, but the sugar you will be eating will be even more dangerous. Dried fruit will meet your caloric needs and has intense flavour people like so much, but besides fuelling your body with energy, it can bring so much damage to your mouth. Raisins and dates are delicious but so sugary and sticky to your teeth that bacteria can easily get to your teeth and start decaying it. Instead of avoiding it entirely, try putting it in water to rehydrate it and brush and floss your teeth immediately afterwards. The best is to do it with natural toothpaste. It’s take just a few minutes to make it but it’s healthier and it doesn’t have harmful chemicals like commercial toothpaste.
Eat more veggies
Vegetable is great for your system and for our teeth as well, mostly because vegetables are rarely acid, and their pH value is just right for your teeth, so you don’t have to worry. Broccoli, lettuce, kale, eggplant, ginger, mushrooms, peppers, potatoes, all have good pH value, and you can eat plenty of it. There are also some fruits that fit into this category like watermelon, bananas, melons, walnuts, and avocado, but in general fruit is the food you should be careful with. This vegetable-based nutrition is also recommended by orthodontist professionals in Sydney who state that they have fewer interventions on people who reduced the amount of fruit they eat, especially when they were on raw food diet.
Get enough calcium
Calcium is what makes your bones and teeth super-healthy but it will not you any good unless your body can store it in the right paces. This is where you ask for help from other vitamins: vitamin K2 is the one that makes calcium you eat get to your teeth, whereas vitamin D eases absorption of calcium. You will find vitamin K2 in hard cheeses, egg yolks, and grass-fed butter. Vitamin D is way easier to find, just let the sunshine in, and make sure you get fish oil from time to time just in case.
People who choose to eat only raw food often find it difficult to reduce the amount of delicious fruit they should take, but when faced with the alternative: bad teeth and receding gums, they accept that. However, you should not avoid fruit altogether, just make sure you floss and brush your teeth regularly and you will notice your dental health improving significantly.
