Baby's First Room

home & body care kids wellness pregnancy & baby Jun 25, 2015

Designing your baby's room is a challenging, but enjoyable activity. Taking into account natural lighting, colours and materials is vital to your baby's wellbeing. Moving your baby to his/her room should be dealt gently and slowly.

This is a guest post by Gabriella Diesendorf, a writer and devoted mother from Australia who loves discussing beauty, green lifestyle choices and parenting techniques. We hope that you find it enjoyable and informative.

The importance of natural lighting

Newborns sleep 18 hours a day and they do not have the regular sleep-wake pattern developed. In order for your baby to establish the regular sleep pattern, it is important to teach them the difference between night and day. This is where a room with natural lighting comes in handy. The sunlight boosts the production of vitamin D which is good for bone health and which reduces the risk of many serious diseases.

The importance of colours

It is widely known that colours can influence our moods, feelings and emotions. Designing your baby's room with warm or cold colours only can be overstimulating for your baby. The balance between different colours is the ideal solution. Warm colours such as orange and yellow are comforting, energizing and cheerful colours. On the other hand, they are not relaxing. Let neutral colours such as beige, grey or white dominate the room and add a touch of orange or yellow when you choose curtains, decorations, wallpaper stickers, a rug, etc. For example, choose a rainbow triangle kids rug if you have grey walls. Strike the balance between cold and warm colours by choosing blue as a cold and calming colour for the walls, while having crib and furniture in white.

The importance of natural materials

The basic furniture in a baby's room should include a cradle, a bassinet, a changing table and a dresser. It is crucial to choose furniture painted without paints containing volatile organic compounds. They can release emissions which can have serious effects on health of you and your baby. When you choose wall and furniture paint, the best option is to choose organic water-based paints. The best mattresses and beddings are those made of organic cotton or organic wool. When your baby grows up, playing on the floor would be a daily activity. Make sure you choose high-quality rugs made of organic materials such as wool so that your baby have a comfortable place for play. Other baby supplies such as clothes, changing pad covers, baby blankets and everything else your baby comes in contact with should be made of organic materials.

The importance of safety

Make sure that furniture meets child safety standards. If you do not have furniture with rounded corners, you can place foam protectors on them. Pay special attention to the safety of the crib and choose only the crib which has spacing between the bars between 2.5 and 6.5 cm and which has distance of 50 cm between the mattress and the top of the crib. Do not put additional pillows or stuffed toys in the crib. Any cords of blinds and curtains should be out of the reach of the child. You can also opt for cordless blinds. Install socket covers.

Co-sleeping vs. moving to their own room

All the elements of the room we have mentioned can be placed in the corner of parents' room. More and more parents prefer co-sleeping which has many benefits both for parents and a child. It is even recommended that baby sleeps in the same room as parents for the first six months. However, there will come a moment your child should move into his/her new room. Ideally, this change should be made when you know your child is ready. The whole process should be slow, with a lot of comforting and gentleness. There is even some techniques which can help you such as creating a bedtime routine and doing a sleepover.

We hope that all this mentioned can be helpful when you decide to design and decorate your baby's room.
