Eating Healthy on a Budget
Nov 26, 2015
Rising food costs can make it hard to eat healthy. Don’t just sit there scratching your head wondering how to survive (literally!) on a tight budget. Look past the short term “benefits” of “saving” money on junk food. Make your health a priority and reap the benefits in the long run. Here are some tips and tricks on eating healthy on a budget.
This is a guest post by Emma White, a passionate nutritionist. We hope that you find it enjoyable and informative.
Meals from Scratch
Making your own food at home is the most affordable and best way to eat nutritiously. Purchasing your own ingredients and getting busy in the kitchen may be a little more time consuming, but the benefits are fantastic – for your pocket and your health.
Planning in Advance
Plan your meals well ahead of time. At the beginning of the week, make a grocery list and stick to it. This will save you loads of money, and prevent impulse buying as well as the urge of ordering takeout. Unplanned meals often end up being unhealthy and a result of our cravings. By planning well in advance, you can also browse the internet and get offers on particular ingredients or items on your list. More cash saved and healthy meals for your family!
Smart Shopping
Going through your past records of what you bought, what you used, and what you ended up throwing away can make the world of a difference. From that, you will know what ended up on your plate and what became waste. Avoid buying what you didn’t use previously and stick to what the family will definitely eat. You’ll save and avoid food spoilage. Be a wise shopper!
Buy in Bulk
The word “bulk” has always been associated with cash saving. When you buy in bulk, you’re saving much more as opposed t buysing smaller packaged items – and probably saving the planet too! This is also true with cooking. Preparing large meals in advance will save you time and money – by saving on electricity usage and the temptation of eating takeout. You can cook in bulk and freeze food for quick and easy meals on those busy days. Get on with your day, plan ahead and add some “bulk”!
Grow Your Own
Do you have a small garden or a few pots? Use them to grow food! You can easily grow some herbs, veggies, or beans by putting your green thumb to use. This will enable you to eat healthy homegrown food, which will be fresh, cost saving and so rewarding. Spend a little time in the garden and reap the benefits – financially and health wise.
Follow these tips and tricks about eating healthy on a budget and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Plan, prep and be smart – make your health a priority. Your pocket doesn’t have to suffer for you and your family to eat nutritiously!
