Homemade Natural Toothpaste

holistic health & nutrition home & body care home remedies recipes sustainable living Dec 17, 2013

Commercial toothpaste has a whole load of harmful chemicals that don’t belong anywhere in or on your body. This homemade natural toothpaste is super easy and fast to make, it saves you money, gives you a feeling of accomplishment, and of course, leaves your mouth feeling squeaky clean and fresh. It’s also good for your teeth and gums! Baking soda cleanses, deodorizes and alkalizes the mouth. Zeolites detoxify and remineralize, coconut oil is an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial and pure peppermint essential oil is cooling, refreshing, anti-bacterial and can even lift your mood!

Ingredients:

2/3 cup baking soda

6 tablespoons calcium carbonate powder

2-4 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil (enough to your desired “toothpaste” consistency)

1 tablespoon zeolites (optional - or other volcanic clay such as bentonite)

5-15 drops of pure peppermint essential oil (based on how “minty” and strong you prefer it - or add your favorite flavor like spearmint, cinnamon, fennel, orange, tea tree, clove, etc). All these pure essential oils promote good oral health.

Add water as needed (optional)

 Optional Additions:

Neem - For an extra healthy boost to the gums, you can grind a neem tablet and add it in. It’s also great to fight infection.

Himalayan Pink Salt – You can add some fine salt to your toothpaste, as the trace minerals are great to mineralize your teeth and fight gum infection. Some people also like to grind a few calcium carbonate tablets and add them in.

Unrefined Stevia Powder – You can add this all-natural herbal sweetener to your toothpaste if you prefer sweetness when brushing your teeth.

A note about baking soda:

If you’re thinking that baking soda might be too abrasive? No, it’s actually not. On the Relative Dentin Abrasivity (RDA) scale, baking soda is much less abrasive than commercial toothpaste. So it’s fine to use daily. Just ensure you learn how to brush your teeth correctly (vertically, NOT horizontally), and use a soft bristle toothbrush.

To prove a little point - I went to the dentist after almost 5 years of using this very recipe. I didn't mention anything to the dentist besides brushing my teeth daily and flossing. What he told me was, quote: "Your teeth are perfect". It was very reassuring! :) He's right. Ever since I made the switch to natural toothpaste, I haven't had any gum issues, cavities or oral health problems.

A note about zeolites:

Zeolites are a group of incredibly mineral rich clays that come from volcanic ash. Zeolite clay has a vast, microscopic surface area which makes it ideal for absorbing any harmful bacteria in your mouth and gums. It has the ability to draw toxins and poisonous compounds out from the blood also, including radio-active particles, by locking them up, and countering their noxious effect. Because zeolite isn’t soluble, after detaining the toxins, it is released from the body along with them via the excretory system - thus it is safe (and even beneficial) if your toddler (or you) swallow your toothpaste. You can either add it into your toothpaste or use the mixture as a dry tooth powder, which is especially travel friendly!

Directions:

Mix together baking soda, calcium carbonate, zeolites, coconut oil and peppermint oil. Add water as needed. Pour in a medium glass jar or airtight container. That’s it! You’re done. Now go brush those pearly whites!

This toothpaste is great for everyone in the family, including babies and toddlers. When preparing it for children, use less or completely omit the essential oil. My toddler loves her toothpaste. It’s like a treat, which makes brushing her teeth much easier and enjoyable! And she feels very proud and self-sufficient when she makes her own toothpaste.
