Off To the Beach to De-Stress Yourself

movement nature connection trauma & mental health Jun 30, 2015

Have you ever sat down and pondered over the amount of stress that you normally take? Probably not. And you know why? Because you’re so busy that you don’t even realize that you’re under way too much stress. You’re so consumed with the things that cause your cortisol levels to go off the charts that you fail to see how everyday stressors at home and at work are taking a toll on your personal and professional life.

This is a guest post by Zyana Morris, a passionate health and lifestyle blogger. We hope that you find it enjoyable and informative.

But you know what? That’s not healthy. And if you continue at it that way, before you know it you’ll be a complete nervous wreck taking dozens of pills and putting your health and life at greater risks.

Take that much needed break

It’s an unarguable fact: unplugging yourself from your regular routine is one of the best ways to reduce stress and take your mind off things that normally stress you out. And a good way to go about that is by setting off to an exotic location by the sea (or lake, river) just to pamper yourself for a couple of days (or hours). In fact, given all that you probably go through in a stressful routine, it’s a well-deserved treat. So shuffle your priorities a bit, pack your bags with necessary beach essentials, and just take that much needed break that you’ve probably been planning for quite some time.

The healthy side

Surfing, swimming, beach sports – beaches are all about that. But that entire tirade aside, the most important aspect of taking out the time for de-stressing yourself is to focus on your health and recover all that you’ve lost as a side-effect of the soaring cortisol levels within your system.

Scientifically speaking, it is possible to walk off stress. Walking briskly helps to activate soothing neurons in the brain that help to reduce stress, anxiety and even depression. High levels of the stress hormone also cause muscular breakdown and one of the ways to counter this adversity is by taking a walk. One of the more significant benefits of walking on the beach is that your muscles and tendons will require more effort to move your foot through the sand as opposed to that made when waling on a hard surface. Not to mention, walking at a slower pace while your feet sink into the sand too requires more effort than otherwise. This is a good exercise to rejuvenate your muscles from the negative effects of cortisol.

Beaches are also free from a significant amount of noise and air pollution unlike the city streets you would normally go down for a morning walk. The fresh moist air is more than just a breath of fresh air for your lungs and promotes good cardiovascular health leading to better physical and metabolic health in the long run. The humidity also exfoliates your skin thus functioning as a natural cleanser. But of course, it is of equal importance for you to stay safe while under the sun and use your sunscreen.

Beach walks give you more time to think

But keeping the science aside, beach walks help you relax even more simply because there’s no clutter. Unlike all the other people and the happenings that you would come across down your regular walking or jogging path, at the beach it’s just going to be you – and probably someone special in case you’ve decided to take them along. That way it’s easier for you to organize your thoughts and focus on what’s been bugging you all the while. Come to think about it, there’s no better way to de-stress yourself other than taking a long walk besides the seashore as the waves crash into your feet that gently tread over the soft wet sand beneath. This can also be asserted by the fact that people tend to cover longer distances as they walk along the beach than walking on a treadmill or down city streets; because they normally lose track of everything that’s been bothering them.

The fun side

While some fancy healthy water sports, others take the opportunity to sport on some trendy beach styles – the latest in swimwear glamourized with sunshine accessories to beach inspired nail art; it’s no less than a fashion parade. And everyone loves a bit of extra tan. The point being; there’s only so much that you can do at the beach to make you feel good about yourself. De-stressing and relaxing isn’t just about taking a breather from your everyday stressors, it’s also about uplifting and revitalizing your mood so that you have more positive energy flowing through you to avoid being too gloomy.

Beachcombing

If you’re really scouring for a reason to take a mental break from the stressors in your life and connect with the present, beachcombing is just the thing for you. Unlike typical recreational activities at a holiday resort, beachcombing is absolutely free and requires no special equipment – and it’s fun.

Beach

A number of people indulge in beachcombing looking for unique looking rocks, pieces of glistening sea glass and enchanting seashells spread all over the sand capturing the entire essence of the beach within them. They do obviously make for fine collectables and souvenirs. But if you’re the more serious sort of beachcomber, then there’s probably a lot more lying around for you. From expensive shades to jewelry, you just might get lucky with something that’s more valuable than the ordinary. And in case you’re single and ready to mingle, who knows what else you just might stumble upon?

So, even if you’re living in a coastal city, take the time out and visit another exotic beach far away from home and work so that you can de-stress yourself with ease. And out of sheer curiosity, where’s this going to be?
