Sorrel Electrolyte and Sport Optimizer Drink

May 14, 2014

Sorrel (Hibiscus sabdariffa), also known as Jamaican Flower, is a seasonal plant indigenous to the Caribbean. It is a favorite in Trinidad and Jamaica, as well as here in Dominica! It’s used to make a refreshing beverage. Sorrel is a rich source of vitamin C and other vitamins and minerals.

Buy the dried flower petals and steep them in water, then cool and save in the fridge. Sweeten it with some raw cane sugar, a valuable and quick absorbing form of glucose to keep the body and muscles fueled while doing activity. The green tea is added as a light and natural form of caffeine, which acts as a stimulant to increase endurance and stamina. Any stimulant and long duration activity can put extra stress on the adrenal glands, therefore make sure to have a recovery drink containing maca to rebuild and nourish the adrenals.

The last ingredient is some unrefined sea salt that provides a valuable source of minerals (electrolytes), which are lost through sweat and must be replaced while doing strenuous activity. Normal body functions, not to mention performance, are severely compromised if adequate levels of electrolytes are not present, especially in the heat and/or when exercise goes beyond the two-hour mark.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cup purified water

2 tablespoons dried sorrel petals (Jamaican flower)

1 table spoon green tea (or yerba mate)

1 teaspoon unrefined cane sugar (or cane juice)

½ teaspoon unrefined sea salt

Directions:

Boil the water. Steep the sorrel and green tea in the water until it becomes ruby red. Strain the leaves, stir in the cane sugar and sea salt. Let cool in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, add some ice if desired. Drink before and/or during your activity to fuel and replenish lost electrolytes. Make this drink in bulk and have it ready to take with you for your races or training every day. It will keep fresh for up to a week in the refrigerator. Enjoy!

Note: There is no need for heat if you let it steep overnight. Add the sorrel and green tea to the water and let steep overnight at room temperature or in the fridge (this drink tastes much better cold).
