The End of the Fertility Journey

pregnancy & baby Oct 22, 2015

When people say “end of fertility,” the first thing that comes to mind is menopause. Most believe that if you no longer get your period, you couldn’t possibly get pregnant. However, there is something misleading about the term “menopause.”

This is a guest post by Evlin Symon, an experienced health writer on the subject of pregnancy. We hope that you find it enjoyable and informative.

Menopause is when a woman reaches 12 months in a row without experiencing her period. The period leading to menopause is called “perimenopause,” which is the overall menopausal transition.

Perimenopause happens to a woman usually in her mid-40s when changes in the menstrual cycle start to occur. It lasts about six years or more. Menopause itself usually starts at the age of 51. Menopause is the end of fertility, but women can still get pregnant during the perimenopause stage.

Getting Pregnant

Women carry 1 to 2 million eggs. But as menopause is getting near; this number dwindles down to only 100. The qualities of these eggs also are not in very good shape. Yes, you may still get pregnant during the perimenopause stage, but chances are very small. Studies suggest that 35-year-old women are six times more likely to encounter pregnancy problems than women who are still 25 years old. However, just because getting pregnant will be difficult during the perimenopause stage, doesn’t mean you are a hundred percent safe from unwanted pregnancy. To help you and your baby stay healthy throughout pregnancy, we’ve recently launched Baby Steps – The Journey of a Lifetime, a pregnancy app to provide you with pregnancy information about your mesmerizing journey, week by week, as the baby grows. If you get pregnant during the perimenopause stage, you will encounter a lot of health risks. Women who got pregnant during this stage will find it difficult to manage pregnancy week by week. Pregnancy during this stage in a woman’s life could be very complicated. Women who got pregnant at the age of 40 to 45 have 50 percent chance of miscarriage.

Just because you are not a teenager anymore, doesn’t mean you should be complacent with your sex life. At the age of 40 to 50 and above, you must still use the right contraceptives to prevent unwanted pregnancies and protect yourself from STDs.

If you want to make sure that you will no longer get pregnant, you must confirm your menopausal. You will know if you can no longer get pregnant if you have not had your period yet for straight 12 months and you don’t have elevated pregnancy hormones known as the follicle-stimulating hormone.

Barrier protections like condoms, IUDs, and more are more popular for women in this age bracket, but women who live healthy lifestyle fitness with no chronic conditions can make use of a fertility specialist. He/ she will guide them on the natural remedies for treatment of perimenopausal symptoms like irregular cycles, hot flashes, and PMS.

Fertility Treatment Options

If you are at the perimenopause stage or the menopause itself and you suddenly want to have children, there are certain options you can choose from. Your age and hormone level will determine what fertility steps you can take. Eating well is especially very important. Consider foods such as spirulina, royal jelly and maca in your diet, which rich in fertility promoting nutrients such as folic acid, antioxidants and ubiquinol.

Exercise is key, as it stimulates body detoxification through sweating. Xenohormones are removed in this process, which are well known to cause hormonal imbalance. It is essential in ensuring your body is healthy for breastfeeding through removal of unwanted fats. Overall, a woman at this age should aim to improve their egg health.

Emotional Journey

Women may be overwhelmed with the fact that time is running out for them to get pregnant. This is a difficult emotional journey, especially for those who badly want to become mothers. It can be depressing for some to the point that some even seek emotional help from experts. When the window for fertility is closing, women find themselves torn between significant decisions, like adopting a child. They can even choose to have egg donation, which can be quite expensive. Besides the pressure of the possibility that they may never be biological mothers, perimenopause also has symptoms that include depression and moodiness. It is really a difficult time for these women. During these difficult times, their partners should be there to support them through this journey. Support from families and friends can also be useful. A therapist could also help women undergoing this tough transition in life.
